These are a few links to local businesses and woodworkers that may be of interest – in alphabetical order. 

 

Aberfan Turning – Beautiful wooden pens and other small turned items

 

AK Carpentry – local Carpenter/Builder/Joiner – Andrew and Kevin know a thing or two about building and carpentry, but also have the skills to do proper Joinery – ie windows, doors, kitchens etc.

 

Alexander Bullock – cabinetmaker specialising in bespoke kitchens, Cardiff based.

 

Axminster Power Tools – well known tool, machinery and consumables supplier, and they now have a Cardiff branch.

 

Bunnings of Usk – traditional ironmongers still sell loose nails and stuff you may struggle to get in a place like B&Q.  They don’t have a website as far as we are aware, but if you search via Google you will get their contact details etc.

 

Cilfiegan Sawmill – another local sawmill (near Usk) who are very professional and specialise in cutting Green Oak for construction and cladding and softwoods like Larch and Douglas Fir for cladding.  Come to us for your dried hardwoods and go to Cilfiegan for unseasoned Oak etc!

 

David Lewis – furniture restorer with decades of experience under his belt.  Can work with metals and leather as well as wood. 

 

John Conrad Jewellery – John is a woodworker and silversmith who amongst other things specialises in silver and wooden rings.  He has an Etsy shop with some stunning pieces in.

 

John Phillip O’Neill – John is a long experienced and talented woodworker who is very creative and able to craft something a bit different, especially items for the home.  John is one of a select few makers who has many items on display and for sale in our shop here on site Handmade in the Forest, so feel free to come and browse.

 

Maindee Handyman Store – Newport based traditional hardware store – also sells sheet material such as MDF and Hardboard, and will cut them for you so that you can fit them in your car.

 

Mike Hussey Upholstery – a time-served traditional upholsterer – can re-upholster a single chair, or a whole coach!

 

Monmouthshire Timber Supplies – a Newport based timber merchant, ideal if you want pressure treated timber or imported hardwoods such as Iroko, American Oak, etc

 

Oak Frameworks – run by Paul Thomas, a real expert in building traditional oak frame buildings – a lovely oak porch, or an entire new build, Paul has done it all.  Paul’s workshop is near to New Inn.

 

Paul Wooldridge (previously traded as Turning Tables) – furniture maker who also runs furniture making courses right here at his workshop in our timber yard.  He also has a good stock of his items in our shop here on site Handmade in the Forest.  Paul is a lovely man who is an ideal person to talk to if you want a bespoke piece of furniture, or something beautiful and elegant for your house made from local wood.

 

Specialist Models and Displays – Cardiff based stage and film prop maker, responsible for building the modern day Daleks amongst other things.

 

Usk Valley Joinery – Usk based joiner, specialises in windows and doors, and they really know their stuff.  They will make you beautiful new doors and windows but they will also make sure they suit you in terms of the insulation value and are happy to offer virtually any combination of glass or double or triple glazed unit.  They take great pride in their work and will go to great lengths to make sure the customer is happy.
